The Wager

Can a conservative Christian movie exist in the world of modern Hollywood? Can a conservative Christian become a movie star and uphold personal integrity?

This movie is a noteworthy effort in the realm of Christian movie making. However, it has its share of fundamental flaws. For starters, Randy Travis (and it hurts me to say this) doesn't quite fit the shoes of "super Hollywood action star." It just doesn't feel like a good fit. However, for the purposes of this film, it is acceptable. I could see Randy Travis wonderfully in the right role. However, it just doesn't quite make a "Tom Cruise". He has an amiable and accessible nature that is wonderful. But, to play a part like this, he needs a big shot of intensity, energy, and ego. He almost seems too friendly and laid back to play Michael Steele, who I imagine to be more like Vin Diesel.

Randy Travis plays Michael Steele, a supposedly famous and successful action movie star. In the wake of an Oscar nomination, he has to contend with some tests of his personal integrity. Relying on the Sermon on the Mount after dreaming about it, he must summon the strength to have the faith needed to get through his struggles.

The other actors are okay, given the script. Candace Cameron Bure (Full House) plays one of the actresses in a Michael Steele movie. Bronson Pinchot (Perfect Strangers) is nice to see as a big wig Hollywood director. Doug Jones (my hero) also plays a trendy blogger who gets the scoop on Michael Steele. Which brings me to the second point: the script is kind of murky. Fitting the Sermon on the Mount into this Hollywood actor's life didn't make a lot of sense. And, the redemption at the end, which is supposed to be the whole point of the movie, didn't make a lot of sense. But, three stars for effort.

And, to be honest, I enjoyed this movie much more the second time. It's nice to see a production created from a conservative Christian perspective. I like the fact that they intertwined "Hollywood" moral conflicts with that of normal, everyday people. Watch it.
This movie deals with some vague sexual and drug related issues, but it's okay for teenagers.

my rating: 3 out of 5
