Midnight in Paris

4.5 out of 5
I have a lot to catch up on. I know there are only like five people that read this blog, and this is for you. After taking a week off to bask in the glory of summer, I am back, with tons of reviews. I saw some great movies over the week, and I can't wait to post some reviews.
Also, I was holding out, hoping that someone would leave some comments on my "favorite flicks of summer", but whatever.
Over the week, I had the privilege of seeing Woody Allen's latest film, Midnight in Paris. I had a good feeling about it, and I was right. Midnight in Paris is funny, charming, romantic, and makes for an intelligent fantasy. I even gained some insight from this movie, too. This is the best Woody Allen film in over ten years, in my opinion. It's now on my all-time favorite Woody Allen list.
In most Woody Allen films, there is a "Woody Allen" character. This character, which was usually the protagonist, sometimes a side character, was the neurotic, intellectual bumbler. Woody Allen has admitted in interviews that he is not really like this in real life. But, he plays this character wonderfully. However, as he has gotten older, he's too old to play this character. It wouldn't feel right for an 80 year old to play the love interest of a 30 something Rachel McAdams. So, for the last ten or fifteen years, he's cast other actors to play "his" character.
In Midnight in Paris, Owen Wilson plays Woody Allen. Owen plays Gil, a Hollywood script writer who is visiting Paris with his fiance, Inez (Rachel McAdams).
At night, Gil likes to take strolls to clear his head, escape some obnoxious people, and enjoy the sights of Paris. One night, something very unusual happens, and Gil finds himself in a different version of Paris. I won't give too much away, but it is a very romantic occurance.
One of the things I loved most in this film is the fleshing out of classic authors, painters, and other artists by modern actors. I didn't get some of the references, admitedly, but most of the ones I understood were joyful.
Midnight in Paris is an optimistic, whimsical expression of enjoying your life as it is. In a world where the grass may always seem greener on the other side, it's easy to forget that the life you have right in front of you is the best. Woody Allen has outdone himself with Midnight in Paris, and I hope it gets some Oscar nominations. You should see it.

  1. I'm usually not really in to Woody Allen films (although I dig Annie Hall), I'm interested in this one. Thanks for the review!

  2. Tim and I have been talking about seeing this one for while, but, knowing Woody Allen can be hit or miss, we were hesitant. After reading your review, though, I think we'll take the chance on it! :)

Yay, Jessie! Since you studied English, you will appreicate some of the more obscure references that I didn't quite get. You and Tim will probably like it!

  4. I have to admit that I am always a little hesitant of Woody Allen movies. Many of them are fantastic, but his personal life gets in the way for me. I appreciate your educational information about Woody Allen. I didn't know that he puts himself in the movies. That's interesting. With all of this said, I have to say that I loved this movie. I would recommend it to anyone. I would even recommend it to English teachers to show to their students. It may just get them interested in their school work!

I don't know if the vocals sampled are from some old song because it has got a really 80s vibe to it.
