Iron Man: Proud to be an American

In the light of the death of Osama Bin Laden, I am recommending an appropriate movie.

Iron Man has the cinematic appeal of a six pack of beer. It's loud, full of explosions, full of cutting edge technology, butt kicking fighting, and it is A W E S O M E !!!

In the opening scenes, we learn that our hero Tony Stark has already gotten himself into trouble. These troubles are, thankfully, the birth of the concept of Iron Man. Being held captive in a cave in the middle east, terrorists force him to build a "super weapon". Oh, he builds a super weapon, alright. Instead of building whatever balogna missle the bad guys wanted, he built a super iron suit so he could break out of cave jail. And, that's just what he did. That was just the beginning of his crime fighting, too. In a suspenseful onslaught of firing guns, grenades, and threatening terrorists, Tony emerges from the cave and blazes a trail to freedom.

Having fed his ego with the first semi-successful suit, Tony gets back home and starts a new project. From the moment he enters the frame, Robert Downy jr. brilliantly embodies the quick-witted, flawed, super rich, and driven Tony Stark. We always know he's up to something. That's probably because he's so loud and prideful about it. Because of the strength of Downey's performance, Iron Man doubles as a comedy. Jeff Bridges plays the Stark company leader to a "t", and the two men are quickly at odds. Tony is tired of the weapons stuff, and Bridges wants nothing more than the weapons company's success. After his captivity, Tony's had a change of heart. The conflict between the two men quickly escalates into a full-blown rivalry. Bridges builds his own suit with Stark technology, and afterward, well, the movie writes itself, right?

Iron Man is such a wonderfully fun comic book movie. It is full of the wit and cheese that entertains, over-the-top performances, coupled with the rocket-fueled action-packed special effects extravaganza. It is, quite simply, an awesome movie. Director John Favreau brings his unique flavor to a comic book movie genre with a much-needed boost of energy and power.

Not only that, but it is a proudly American movie. Iron Man is born of adversity, hard work, sacrifice, enginuity, and crazy optimism. Those are all traits that aptly sum up this great country.

my rating: 5 out of 5
