top Thanksgiving movies

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It's a great time to get together with your families, eat turkey, watch football, and slowly sink into the abyss of torture and insanity as your loved ones drive you crazy. What better way, after the football, to shut everyone up than by sitting around the tube and watching a family favorite movie?

These movies are my favorite ones to watch at Thanksgiving. They are family-friendly (mostly), and help to cure that holiday cabin fever. Plus, they give you a bit more valuable time with the ones that matter.

1. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

This is cinematic escapism in its purist form. As I get older, I appreciate its genius more and more. The characters, the setting, the theme, the visuals, and that wonderful music just improve with age. Good for kids (although a bit creepy at times) and still enchanting for adults, this is the best family movie to watch on / around Thanksgiving. It's also one of my favorite movies ever made.

2. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)

A fun fantasy space adventure that will keep adults enthralled with nostalgia, and win the younger members of your family into a new generation of Star Wars fandom.

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011)

New on DVD and BluRay, the final installment of Harry Potter is another wonderful fantasy/adventure for the family. It's the sweeping, dramatic conclusion to a movie franchise that's been going for like twelve years. It's a bit intense for younger kids, so if your kids are too little, maybe one of the first two Potter films would be more appropriate.

4. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (?)

Yeah, it may seem obvious. But, put this on and watch the kids be captivated! It's a classic.

5. Elf (2003)

Yeah, it's time. Break out the Christmas movies. Elf is light enough to entertain children and adults without being too dramatic or heavy-handed. But, it's also fairly well-made and funny. it's also a nice way to introduce the Christmas season to the fam.

So, there you have it. These are my favorite movies to watch on Thanksgiving with the family. What are your favorites?

  1. The Wizard of Oz is an excellent choice. I remember the annual television airing being a huge event in my family. I also enjoy Home Alone at Thanksgiving. A couple of more recent releases I find appropriate for Thanksgiving weekend are Leatherheads and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
