Valentine's Day Movie Guide For Men
Valentine's Day is upon us, guys. If you haven't made grand plans or called ahead for reservations, it may be too late. You might have to stay in and curl up on the couch with your loved one. Not to fear, men, because I can guide you to the right movie to watch. Valentine's Day is like a cinematic landmine field for men who want to avoid getting stuck watching What To Expect When You're Expecting, or some other sappy girl movie like 27 Dresses.
At the same time, you don't want to be watching some testosterone drenched man flick like The Avengers, or Fast and Furious. Unless you want your girlfriend / wife to be mad at you. Chances are, though, if you're in a relationship that's successful, then you have enough sense not to even suggest a man movie like that, and enough sense to listen to me.
There are plenty of movies out there with wonderful love stories that are also not mind-numbingly terrible or boring. Before you get stuck watching The Notebook, take the initiative to tell your significant other that you want to watch one of these romantic gems. She'll love the love story, and you'll also be entertained.
1. Walk the Line (2005)
A love story based on a true story with some tender, affecting moments. It's also about the rise and fall of music legend Johnny Cash, so it's not all girl talk and slumber parties.
2. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Directed by a dude's dude, David O Russell, Silver Linings Playbook is a romantic comedy with grit. Bradley Cooper plays a young man with some psychological troubles who moves back in with his parents and tries to restore ties with his ex-wife. Meanwhile, he meets and starts a rocky relationship with Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence). Plenty of candor and man humor will entertain you in this twist on a love story.
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Fasinating performances by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, and Charlie Kaufman's brilliant and thoughtful script will make this worth a watch on Valentine's Day. The mind-bending story and intriguing originality of this flick will have you falling in love all over again, and questioning the nature of your very existence. Compare that to some crappy movie like Because I Said So starring (gag) Mandy Moore, or He's Just Not That Into You starring that tool from the Apple Mac commercials.
4. Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
This comedy classic is fun, innocent, and very entertaining for guys and gals. Just don't spout out too many quotes while watching it, or you'll lose cool points with your lady. If your girl is a nerd, she may enjoy your quote knowledge. Either way, you can't go wrong with Napoleon, GOSH!
5. Knocked Up (2007)
A bit crass at times, but still romantic nonetheless. Knocked Up is a love story wrapped in hilarious man humor. This one is a bit more crude than some of the others on the list, but it is a great flick. It's kind of like a romantic comedy from a man's perspective.
So, you're welcome. Good luck out there and have a great Valentine's Day. Let me know if any of these recommendations are helpful.

I like your list! I'd like to add Six Days Seven Nights, Fool's Gold and Fever Pitch. Happy Valentine's Day!
ReplyDeleteI'm a little late to the party here, but Tim and I watched our copy of the Wedding Singer on Valentine's Day - always a fun one. I'm extremely picky when it comes to on-screen romance, but I like your list, particularly the first two. Off the top of my head, I'd add Adventureland, Juno, Away We Go, Edward Scissorhands, The Muppets, and Moonrise Kingdom. Oh, and Stranger Than Fiction is a good one, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jesse!! You know, I love Juno, too. That would be a good one. The Muppets is fun. You're never late to the party!
